“The Circle I Tread” is a first-person narrative of personal mental and physical issues in contemporary America. Levas gets into the character’s mind to such an extent that we cannot help but believe that at least some of the events are autobiographical.I found the length of the story to be unsettling - though described as a novella, I could not help feeling that some of the direct speech was included to fill up space and increase the word count. There are many places where a few sentences could advantageously replace half a page of dialog.
As for the title, though the protagonist explains it, I found the explanation to be inconsistent and illogical, and though I guess the explanation is intended as the thematic climax of the story (the plot climax is something else), it failed to work for me.
There were a few stylistic oddities throughout the piece that brought me up short, and detracted from my enjoyment of the story.
I have read some of Levas’ earlier work, and this, despite the reservations above, is much better than his previous efforts.

The character has major issues, but with effort and tragedy is able to reach a place in life that he can identify as his own. The journey down the road is filled with emotion and sincerity. All together a good read.
Paul Levas brings us a story of what some of us have to go through. The inner battle with yourself. Taking on those personal demons that root around inside your brain, causing you to second guess yourself or those around you. I've had similar problems in my past, but managed to work through it to become the better person I am today. This book is deep and thought provoking, and well worth checking out.
